Referrals are the most powerful (and most overlooked) source of leads for contractors. When a happy customer tells a friend or neighbor about your work, that referral comes with built-in trust. It’s easier to close, costs nothing to acquire, and often leads to better-paying clients. At Local Contractor, we help service pros build systems that keep work flowing—and referrals are at the center of that strategy.
Most contractors rely on referrals passively. You do a great job, hope the client tells their neighbor, and maybe a few months later you get a call. That’s not a system—that’s luck. Instead, you need to build a process that consistently turns every job into new opportunities.
Start by simply asking. A week after you finish the job, send a friendly email or text asking the client if they know anyone else who could use your services. Make it personal and appreciative. You can say something like: “Thanks again for trusting us with your project. If you know any neighbors or friends looking for [your service], feel free to share my info—we’d love to help.”
Offer a small thank-you to clients who refer others. It doesn’t have to be cash. You could offer a $25 gift card, a free gutter cleaning with their next service, or a discount on a future job. People are more likely to refer when there’s a small perk—and it shows appreciation for their loyalty.
Print simple referral cards you can leave behind after a job. These can have your name, phone number, and a space where the customer writes their name. If their friend brings it back, they both get something extra. It’s an old-school tactic that still works.
Another key tactic is to time your ask. Right after a job is finished and the homeowner is happy is the perfect moment to request a referral or review. Don’t wait until months later when the excitement fades. If you’re doing work in a neighborhood, ask your client if they’d be willing to introduce you to the HOA, or post your info in the neighborhood Facebook group or Nextdoor page.
Make your work visible. Yard signs, branded vehicles, and social posts showing “before and after” photos are all passive ways to get noticed. Ask your clients if it’s okay to take a picture of your finished work and tag them (with their permission) on social media. Often, their friends will see the post and reach out.
Build relationships with realtors, interior designers, property managers, and insurance agents. These professionals are constantly asked for contractor recommendations—and a single connection could keep your calendar full.
Most importantly, treat every job like it’s the one that will get you five more. Show up on time, communicate clearly, go the extra mile, and follow through after the job is done. When homeowners feel like they were treated well, they become your best marketers.
